How an Autism or ADHD Diagnosis Can Help Your Child's Schoolwork
A diagnosis doesn’t define your child, but it can help them get the support they need to thrive in the classroom. This month, we show how identifying autism or ADHD can improve your child’s school experience and academic success.

August is here, which means it’s officially back-to-school season in New York. If you’re thinking back to last year’s homework struggles, you’re not alone. School struggles are common, especially in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder.

But how do you know if they have a neurodevelopmental condition or if they’ll simply grow out of it? Sometimes, those challenges are signs that your child processes information differently.

It may be time to schedule an evaluation for ADHD or autism spectrum disorder at Infinite Life & Wellness in White Plains, New York.

An evaluation and diagnosis can provide valuable answers. More importantly, it can open the door to resources, accommodations, and strategies that can help your child succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Below, our board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Evelyn Ha, MD, FAAP, explains ways an autism or ADHD diagnosis can help your child’s schoolwork — just in time for the 2026 back-to-school season.

A diagnosis can help explain why your child is struggling

A diagnosis helps you understand why school has become challenging for your child. For example, a child with ADHD may struggle to stay focused, complete assignments, or follow multistep directions because of executive dysfunction.

On the other hand, a child with autism may have difficulty with social communication, changes in routine, sensory sensitivities, or interpreting classroom expectations.

Understanding the underlying reason helps you (and your child’s teachers) respond with effective strategies instead of frustration. In fact, many parents feel relieved once they know the root cause of their child’s struggles.

Your child may qualify for school accommodations

Your child may be eligible for accommodations through a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) once they receive a diagnosis.

In New York, families can work with their school district's Committee on Special Education — or the Committee on Preschool Special Education for younger children — to determine what services and support may be appropriate.

Examples of accommodations include:

  • Extended time on tests
  • Reduced-distraction testing environments
  • Assistive technology (like speech-to-text)
  • Speech, occupational, or behavioral therapy services

This is just a small sample of accommodations, but in general, accommodations help create an environment where your child can thrive.

Teachers can better support your child

When teachers understand how your child learns best, they can adapt their teaching strategies accordingly.

Changes, such as breaking assignments into smaller steps, providing visual instructions, or allowing sensory breaks, can be just the thing your child needs to succeed in school.

If your child has an IEP, teachers are legally required to implement the accommodations and services outlined in the plan.

Your child can build confidence

Without an explanation for their struggles, children may believe they’re lazy, bad at school, or not as smart as their classmates.

A diagnosis helps shift the conversation away from blame. Your child can learn more about how their brain works and how they learn best.

It helps you advocate for your child

Many parents describe receiving a diagnosis as finally having a roadmap that helps them recognize both their child’s specific strengths and areas for improvement.

Armed with that knowledge, you can more confidently advocate for your child’s needs at school, at home, and in healthcare settings.

Benefits beyond school

Perhaps most importantly, the benefits of a diagnosis extend far beyond the classroom.

The skills children develop — from communication and emotional regulation to organization, problem-solving, and social interaction — can support their success not only throughout their school years but well into adulthood.

When should you consider an evaluation?

If you’ve noticed ongoing challenges at school or home, it’s time to talk with Dr. Ha. Consider scheduling an evaluation at Infinite Life & Wellness if your child:

  • Struggles to pay attention
  • Struggles to complete schoolwork
  • Is frequently overwhelmed by classroom routines
  • Experiences significant sensory sensitivities
  • Has trouble making or maintaining friendships
  • Receives repeated concerns from teachers
  • Seems bright but consistently underperforms

At Infinite Life & Wellness, Dr. Ha takes an integrative, holistic approach to caring for children with ADHD, autism, and other developmental concerns.

She looks beyond symptoms to understand the whole child and creates a personalized treatment plan that may include nutrition, supplements, lifestyle recommendations, and behavioral strategies.

She works closely with your family, schools, and other healthcare specialists to make sure your child receives comprehensive, coordinated care designed to help them thrive at home, in the classroom, and beyond.
